Session Program

Competency frameworks set out the expectations of what an optometrist is able to do.  The ability to show the skill and value of the optometrist in the health system enables advocacy to promote the evolution of the profession to match the needs and expectations of the community they serve.  As the health system, technology and community change over time so must the work optometrists do and the skills they possess.  Competency standards also reflect the professional and ethical expectations of a contemporary optometrist. Competency standards allow a pathway to improve the standing and respect of the profession with policymakers and other health professionals and are vital to provide the foundation of effective advocacy and promotion of optometry.
